COS top track and field runners will compete in the Nor Cal Tournament finals on Friday, May 8 at Diablo Valley College.
Every spring track and field runners compete in the Nor Cal Tournament finals with one goal — to compete in the State Tournament. Last weekend the COS track and field team competed in the Nor Cal trials and twelve of our athletes — six men and six women — qualified to compete in the finals this Friday.
Assistant track and field coach and head cross country coach, David Bronzan, describes the team as being very distance oriented, with nine of the athletes being distance runners.
Team member David Sanchez has already competed in the finals for the men’s 10,000 meter race, which consists of 25 laps and is held early due to the strenuous efforts required to compete in this race. He placed second with a time of 32 minutes, 18.55 seconds, declaring him a Nor Cal champion.
Fellow team member Andrew Ochoa also qualified to compete in the finals for the men’s 1,500 and 5,000 after achieving the fastest time at the Nor Cal trials, clocking in at 3:57 and 1:54 respectively.
Two of the women team members are cousins: Sierra Gonzales and Allison Gonzales. Sierra qualified for the 800 meter race, while Allison qualified for both the 1500 meter and the 500 meter race.
“We are expecting some very good races on Friday,” said Coach Bronzan. “They will race well.” With six of the twelve qualifying athletes being freshman, this young COS track and field team will continue to race well — well into next season.
