As part of the COS Arts and Lectures series, the "Quality of Life" radio program is returning to COS for taping. It will be broadcast the following week by National Public Radio stations in Fresno and Bakersfield.
This Thursday, from 7-9pm in the Ponderosa Hall at COS, veteran journalist Terry Phillips will moderate an informal public debate with guest speaker Tommy Smothers, discussing the limitations of free speech on campus and in the workplace.
"The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" was a top-rated variety show on CBS during the 1960's. The network fired the brothers, but later lost a federal court case over the notorious dispute. Smothers will discuss his experience with censorship and how it applies to the rights of personal expression on campus.
Other invited panelists include experts in business, academics and the law.
The event is free to the general public and will be an open discussion. Students are encouraged to attend and participate, acting as "callers" and asking questions from microphones in Ponderosa Hall.
The "Quality of Life" current affairs program is hosted by Terry Phillips, a former foreign correspondent who covered such major stories as the collapse of the Soviet Union as well as wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia and Sarajevo. The show airs on KVPR (89.3 FM) in Fresno and KPRX (89.1) in Bakersfield at 9am on Tuesdays. It is repeated at 7pm and is available online at www.kvpr.org.
