A Sticky Situation

Majority rules: We hate the new stickers

Though the stickers are new, we can only hope they are not here to stay. Full story

Staff Editorial:

Recently, the COS police department decided to terminate the parking placard and replace it with a parking sticker. This recent shift is not something new to community colleges as Fresno City College has also chosen to use the parking sticker in recent years.

The sticker is in response to reports of stolen placards and placards being duplicated or altered. Also, student reported of the placard falling off the rear view mirror or students forgetting to put them up. The sticker can be easily seen by parking officers and is not easily stolen.

So what’s the student response to such a change? COS police department has reported that most of the feedback has been negative. Though it makes forgetting to post a permit impossible, the sticker has become an eyesore. One of the main concerns of permit buyers is the fact that a sticker cannot be transferred from car to car. The COS police have acted to solve this problem by offering a second permit to students for the discounted price of $10, should any student want to purchase a second permit, they can be requested at the COS police department. However, it must be acknowledged that this would not be an issue with the placard. Not only is it one sticker per car, but the sticker is incredibly hard to remove. Personal experience with a Fresno City parking sticker shows that it can, in fact, stay on for months past when the semester ends. For students needing to remove the parking sticker, warm soapy water or rubbing alcohol have been the suggested tools for the job.

Though it is understandable why the sticker has been put into effect, the attitude toward it has not changed. The placard was still an overall better choice. It was transferable and easily removed for the same price as the stickers. Also, there was no fear of hurting the paint job or tinted windows of vehicles as there is in attempting to remove the parking sticker. Furthermore, having to apply and remove stickers semester after semester can be frustrating.

Though the stickers are new, we can only hope they are not here to stay. Many schools such as Fresno State still use the placard system without much trouble. Should we get our old parking permits back, I urge students to be more careful. Take responsibility and remember to keep your windows up and place your placard on the mirror.

We should be careful with what we complain about and wish for, we just might get it.

Daily permit should then be disregarded and turn into sticker. Why change a system that suits faculties and students preferences. Why consider purchasing and put a daily permit on a dashboard if the citation giver does not care to walk out of one's automobile and proceed to look at the dashboard. Citation automobile personal has been given their privilege and not a right to be lazy by looking through the back bumper. Although give the enforcer credit for abiding and following policy and procedures. Thanks for genuinely being sympathetic to needs of everyone here at CoS. Oh, try updating your website. Website gives false, incorrect information such as 'permit is transferrable from vehicle to vehicle.'

I think this sticker thing is stupid. As for me I'm not a 'put a sticker on my car' type of person. It discolors your cars paint and scratches the window tint too. If COS wants to help us, why not sell us a clear sleeve the same size as the placards to be able to hang on the rear view mirror? I my opinion COS police are only doing this to not get off their golf carts and check the rear view mirrors, this way they just drive by...lazy fat ppl. Why must we the ppl that have never forgotten our placards be punished for those who have? Bring back the placards or sell us a clear sleeve to hang this ridiculious sticker on the rear view mirror.

Would it be allowed to put the sticker on a placard and hang the placard on your rear-view mirror? It would still be visible through the front windshield, and then you can transfer it from car to car.
I think the sticker is totally lame, and would love to see the placards back. I never had trouble with losing mine, because I just always kept it on the mirror.

There is another issue about this what if you do not drive your own car and the person refuses to allow you to deface their car with these eyesores? They do not care it is your problem put it on or pay a ticket that is not fair to those who drive their parents cars or like in my case my sons car with custom paint and tinted windows. He does not approve of the god awful green color of the sticker. Should he have to allow me to place this ugly sticker on his cool car?

if you want to show your disappointment with the stickers, don't buy one. i say we all park on the streets around the college. there are several parking lots very close to the college. or better yet, ride a bike or even car pool with friends.

Faculty have a removable sticker that can move from car to car. Why not students?
