Editorial: Black History Month, Historically Speaking

An Editorial

Black History Month is a time for recognizing African American people who have excelled, overcome, altered the course of black history, and who have aided in the long often-overwhelming struggle for equality and civil rights in America. It is a month long celebration for a people who have struggled with freedoms in every aspect of the word.

There needs to be a line drawn between hate speech and free speech because there is a tremendous difference between them.

New Lows for Online Gaming

Is that a joystick or are you just happy to see me?

I have always considered myself a geek (with just a dash of nerd,) which means I’m often subject to a slew of stereotypes, some good and some ridiculous. But while I have never shirked the title nor felt ashamed of the reputation, every once in a while I come across something that makes me sigh and shake my head.

Making it to Summer

Being able to get through a hard week of school is tough and no one (that I have met) enjoys it.  But being able to persevere and get through it feels like an accomplishment in the end, and will make summer feel all the better.

The Hue of Academic Freedom

The bottom line is that teachers have the right to academic freedom and discussing or arguing their views in classrooms when it comes to the context of the courses subjects but the information that is being discussed must be accurate and unbiased.

Armenian Genocide Resolution

To allow a foreign government to intimidate and influence the American government is not what our country is about.  Recognizing and reconciling with our past legacies, such as slavery and the treatment of Native Americans, has brought eternal values of human rights to our culture.

A Tribute to J.D. Salinger

A Student Column

On January 29, 2010 we lost one of the greatest writers of our time, J.D. Salinger.  He was an enigma of a man, literary genius, and recluse; who at the height of his career shunned accolades and instead chose the path less traveled. He left in his wake one of the most celebrated literary characters of all time, one Holden Caulfield.

Save the Last Dance for Me

A Student Opinion Piece

Prom has been, in essence, a right of passage from the comforts of adolescence into rigorous adulthood for most high school students. It’s the last hurrah, a time to spend laughing; dancing the night away, creating a lasting memory. Why should it matter that there would be one gay couple at the prom?

Don't You Forget About Me: A John Hughes Tribute

A Student Column

At this year's Oscars I was greatly pleased with the special tribute to one of my childhood heroes the late writer, producer, and director, John Hughes. His movies revolutionized the teen genre film market and gave teens like me a voice.

Stop Color Coordinating Our Calendar

A Student Opinion Piece

What purpose remains for bringing awareness to the fact that we ALL are indeed different?  The month no longer stands as an acknowledgement of social equality but instead perpetuates racism, reminding each and every American that they are slightly more Irish, Russian, Chinese, Bulgarian or Haitian than their neighbor.

Why We Need Black History Month

A Student Opinion Piece

Black History Month is not meant to remind us of our differences and segregate us. It’s meant to give African-Americans a sense of cultural pride and knowledge.
