When looking for an art student, the welding classroom -located at College of Sequoias farm -isn't the first place you would look, but then again Catherine Velosa isn't your average art student. Velosa is a costume designer, sculptor, drawer, painter, and most recently, a welder.
Velosa is working diligently to finish her Tibetan-style prayer wheel that she is casting out of bronze for her upcoming solo art show at the Design by Arenas Fine Art Gallery in downtown Visalia. Velosa is showcasing all of her art mediums at the art show under one common theme.
According to Velrosa it reflects "how society is so into technology that we are missing out on everything else."
A prayer wheel is full of prayer, called mantra, and sends compassion and healing in all directions as it is turned.
When asked why weld a prayer wheel, Velrosa said, "I really like the form. It's hard to mold metal to that form. Metal is durable. It will be here longer than you."
To view Velosa's prayer wheel and some of her other works check out her solo art show daily from February 21 through March. For more information call Design by Arenas Fine Art Gallery at
