Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, unveiled their tablet computer today amid much media frenzy.
The tablet is officially christened the iPad. According to the onsite New York Times tech blogger, Brad Stone, “It looks like… A big iPhone”. It is about 10 inches standing up, half an inch thick and weighs about a pound and a half. The iPad has 16 GB of RAM and is going to be available with 32 or 64 GB of hard drive space.
Jobs started the event by releasing some interesting facts and figures concerning the company. Jobs highlighted the number of Apple Stores (284 to be exact), the fact that there is over 140,000 apps available in the app store and that recently, the 250 millionth iPod was sold.
This new tablet technology will be entering a market in competition with the Kindle (Amazon.com’s eBook reader) and other eBook readers. The iPad will likewise be squaring up against every net book PC on the market. Steve Jobs has said unless the iPad can do better what eReaders, media players and net books do separately then “it has no reason for being.”
Although costs between $800 and $1000 have been rumored for the iPad, Apple has not officially released a price.
* Editor's Note: Pricing has been stated as ranging from $499 to $829.
