Tutoring at the Hanford Center is now available.
Tutoring started on Monday, January 25 at the Hanford Center upstairs in the general study area. The tutors are available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm and Thursdays from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. These tutors will assist in the areas of Math (21, 230, 200, 360) English 1 and 2 and Spanish. There will even be a tutor for Biology on Fridays.
Sandy Williams is the Tutorial Center Coordinator. If you have any questions you can call or email her at 737-6211 or sandyw@cos.edu. Williams really wants to stress that if any students need help in their studies, they should stop by the Hanford Tutorial Center. Her expectations for students at the center this semester is to, “ try to provide tutors, but the tutors are reliable. I anticipate it will go great. I hope to keep it going. When I got here there never used to be a tutorial center so I want to build up more subjects to have available for students. I suggest that students take advantage of it because not many colleges have a wonderful tutoring program.”
Just to break the ice Williams wants students to know that it’s ok to get help without feeling embarrassed. “ I took a survey a while back and most of the students that receive help are the 3.5 GPA students rather than the 2.0 students because most universities require a higher GPA so students would go to help raise their GPA. But to try and take the stigma away from it, we want to keep it positive rather than a negative experience. To make students more comfortable the tutoring center is the study room upstairs so it looks like a regular study room. We also take walk ins for those who have questions, they are not required to stay after they accept help. Also EOPS students get extra tutoring because it is part of the program so students shouldn’t feel embarrassed to get help from higher students.”
Overall the main true goal for the Hanford Tutoring Center is to reach out and touch students, and changing the students mind frames to do it. So don’t be afraid to check out the Hanford Center it is there to help you succeed in your studies.
