While some athletic coaches place great emphasis on game statistics, the COS women’s softball coach believes focusing on statistics is a distraction.
“I try not to focus on [statistics] because that is how you lose perspective of what you need to do for the day,” said last season’s Coach of the Year, Coach Michelle Bolt.
Currently having six wins and one loss, Bolt said keeping the game in perspective and having good character — sportsmanship — contribute to the successful season that her Lady Giants softball team is enjoying. The coach completes the trifecta, saying skill is also a major contributor to her team’s success.
Out of the three success components she described, Bolt believes “character is the biggest muscle.” She also says, “without [character] you’ll be disappointed.”
With only three returning players on the team, the Lady Giants faces the challenges that come with being a relatively young team.
“A lot of responsibility falls on the freshman with little experience,” said Bolt.
Nevertheless, the coach emphasizes her entire team is collectively skilled — offensively and defensively.
“Alycia Campos, jersey number 33, is a major, heavy hitter who consistently gets on base. Clean-up hitter Cassandra Lemos, jersey number 25, is the player who brings Campos and the team over home plate for the runs.” Further, Bolt praises her team, describing all the players as being valuable.
For the past two seasons, the Lady Giants have captured the title of Central Valley Conference Champions.
“I believe in playing every team like they are your rival. That’s how you make it to post season,” said Bolt.
The Lady Giants describe their game philosophy as having integrity, responsibility, honor, commitment, and authentic communication (straight talk). Perhaps it is this philosophy that makes them giants on the softball field.
