Students were evacuated from the second floor of the Kern Building after black smoke billowed from an elevator shaft around 11 am.

The Kern building evacuation lasted for around 15 minutes. The smoke was cleared out from the building by airing it out and making sure there was no further danger.

According to campus police, no students were injured.

Carol Enns, the Division Chair of Social Sciences, said that dark smoke “filled the hallway” and they were escorted out of the building by campus police.

“It was to the point that it wasn’t good to breath the air, it was more of a dark smoke so we’re guessing that there might have been a rubber component to the elevator that might have been smoldering,” said Enns.

According to Eric Mittlestead, Dean of Student Services, the smoke was probably caused by a pump leaking hydraulic fluid from the elevator.

“I think the story will be that we have an elevator malfunction that turned out to be a pump that went out and as the pump went out it blew some smoke into the building, people saw the smoke so they evacuated the building,” Mittlestead said.

Stephanie Collier, Dean of Arts, Letters, and Business, said that she got an email that stated that the elevator was out of order, and then was notified about the smoke soon after.

“The elevator was out of order, that had already happened. We got some emails saying the elevator was out of order and then apparently the smoke kind of started coming,” Collier said.

According to Collier, students responded and evacuated the building in a quick safe manner.

“I think people did a really good job of clearing out in a good orderly fashion and checking to make sure that anyone with disabilities was able to come down.  It was good, there wasn’t a lot of chaos,” Collier said.

Currently, campus electricians are working to diagnose the problem with the elevator and at this time Middlestead  is not certain about the extent of the damage. Repair cost is currently unknown. Mittlestead says it could cost ”anywhere between zero and a hundred thousand dollars.”

monomania“Monomania” is not so much an album as it is a clumsy assortment of songs that tread the same waters that the band and their peers have done before, and far better. Deerhunter gives us the same helping of light indie rock with touches of noise and psychedelia, but the quality continues its gradual decline from their last release.

Nothing about this album is interesting, or even memorable, to the point that even dedicated fans of this style of music will be disappointed.

Monomania is the Georgian band’s sixth studio release. The band has always kept a fairly consistent tone by constructing simple, catchy indie rock melodies with noisy guitar effects pedals, which creates a harsh, yet drowsy-like effect on their music. This release is slightly rougher around the edges, more focused on rhythm and heavy chords than they have in the past.

These are subtle differences, but beyond that, the band takes it relatively safe. For a band that been hailed by the media as “avant-garde”and “experimental,” it sounds too much like music that I’ve heard before.

Lack of progression aside, this album is just plain dull. The songwriting just isn’t on the same level as it was on their highly acclaimed album “Microcastle,” or even their last album — the disappointing, but still enjoyable “Halcyon Digest.” It has adequate lyrics, adequate melodies, and yet nothing that can be easily recalled shortly after hearing any of the songs. I struggle to even remember a single guitar riff, or a single piece of lyrics; it seems like the whole album has passed right through me.

I cannot see any reason to recommend this album to anyone. Better psychedelic indie rock has come out recently to satisfy even the most starving of fans, and I would even advise huge Deerhunter fans to take caution and try streaming it before they buy it. It may not be terrible, but if it was, it might have actually had something memorable about it. Maybe it is worse off for that.

Gabriel Yanez

I’m a Film and Video Production major. Sadly, for myself and those like me, COS does not offer any film classes other than Film Appreciation. Despite this, the school still has a full AV lab with everything a beginning film student could need to record sound and to shoot and edit a video project.

Yet all these resources go unused. These issues were discouraging, especially given my chosen path. Until I met James Kelty, that is.

Kelty is a co-worker of my father’s, and when he found out that I was looking for experience in the film industry, he asked my father for my contact information.

Kelty runs a small production company from his home in Cambria, California. He is currently shooting a movie based on the life and works on Father Junipero Serra (the founder of the Catholic Missions), here in California for the EWTN network.

When he contacted me, I jumped at the chance to work on a movie set. This is how I began working for Kelty back in December. I started off as an intern doing manual labor — anything from helping construct the set we were filming that day to polishing a pair of boots for an actor.

Even though I wasn’t working with a camera, I felt like I had found my place in the world. Fast forward to now, and I am no longer an intern, but now the best boy (a helper to the camera man or director). Along with the new title, I’m getting on-the-job experience. I found a career that I love and I’m getting an education that the school could never provide.

What I’m saying is that we shouldn’t wait for the school to take action and provide the course for us. If it is not offered, we should find a way to get the same experience, instead of waiting on someone else to do it for us.
