To celebrate Women’s History Month, a Self-Defense Awareness for Women Workshop was held (in Hospital Rock from 12:00-1:00pm Thursday) hosted by the Student Equity Committee. Shelli Giles a member of the Committee stated that the event was to celebrate diversity. “It was a workshop part of celebrating Women’s History Month,” said Giles. The workshop was presented by David Schluep, CEO of Tactical Pro International and founder of ‘Warrior Woman Street Survival Workshops’. Schluep’s background includes 21 years of experience in the military, law enforcement, and private sector security. Schluep has also trained with Special Forces, Delta Force, Navy Seals, and Green Berets. Schluep’s is also experienced in dealing with crimes against women, human trafficking and missing children.
Schluep stated that there is a growing need for women awareness against victimization here in the valley. “It’s [about] knowing what to do before you have to,” said Schluep, “Not trying to figure it out while it’s happening.”
Designed specifically for women, the workshops focus on three learning styles; visual, auditory, and tactile. The self-defense workshops involve techniques in avoiding victimization through educating on how criminals choose their victims, statistics, and tactical training.
Mrs. T, a faculty member who took Schluep’s workshop last year stated that it was very beneficial to take the course. “It saved my life,” said Mrs. T, “I recommend every woman taking this class because it will save your life.”
The educational plan covers reflective observations, active implementation, conceptualization, and experience. Some concepts taught in the course are rape prevention, child security, home security, human trafficking, driving safety, and internet safety. The self-defense segment of the course is learning to utilize tactical training of street survival techniques including such concepts as Mui Thai and Aikido.
The course would charge $45 per student and includes hands-on training in the four hour course and a 78 page book.
