In a time when the price of healthy food is spiraling out of control, and most people’s grocery budget is stretched to the limit, the Visalia Farmers Market offers those willing to brave the chill of a winter Saturday morning a chance to stock up on healthy food at bargain prices.
Located in the Sequoia Mall parking lot in south Visalia, the farmers market takes place every Saturday morning from 8 am to 11:30 am.
There was also a Thursday market in downtown Visalia but that one closed on Oct. 27, and won’t be back until spring. The Saturday market however is one of the few farmers markets in the area to stay open year-round.
With our region’s rich agricultural history, the farmers market provides a chance for people to experience local foods grown by local farmers while supporting local businesses.
The market offers booth space to local community groups and organizations that are interested in reaching out to the public.
One of the booths belongs to Debb Campbell, who has been an instructor at COS for 20 years.
“Chef Debb’s” seasonal table offers information about selecting and preparing fruits and vegetables. She now offers a seasonal table course at COS, giving students the opportunity to visit with local farmers as well as learn recipes with healthy and fresh foods.
Most vendors accept WIC Fruit, vegetable vouchers as well as food stamps.
The market offers a wide variety of locally grown produce and seasonal handmade products such as pottery, handmade furniture, a variety of local art, and homemade jewelry. You can get everything from bee pollen to a therapeutic massage.
It is a great way to find local products as well as find out where your food comes from.
