With the holidays just gone by, there was a lot of eating and pigging out going on. There were a lot of people putting on weight and not knowing how to lose it once New Year’s came around.
The man on campus who knows all about this is head athletic trainer Dennis Goebel. He said that if you want to lose weight after the holidays you need to assess yourself before thanksgiving by checking your body fat percentage and then do it after the holidays to see how much weight or fat you put on.
Goebel would say, “You want to know where you are before and after the holidays so you can come back to your prior weight or decide to weigh less than you did before the holidays.”
Goebel said that after the holidays you want to do high intensity workouts that you will enjoy and be able to talk while you do, since you can work off fat in a quicker time by burning more calories and keeping your heartbeat up.
“Lifting weights is not a good high intensity workout to do because you have to keep taking breaks and that won’t help anybody,” Goebelsaid.
Going on the treadmill and pushing it up to high speed would be a good high intensity workout to do because you want to go for 20 minutes for 3 days a week without taking breaks and it’s easy to talk while on the treadmill and can burn more calories that way according to Goebel. When people are working out during this time, Goebel said that the best stretches to avoid injury are, “A complete body flex program, which is an active stretch and can take you through a full range of motion with your body.”
As far as eating habits are after the holidays, the best thing to do is eat healthy and change your lifestyle according to Goebel, but he does say that changing lifestyle is very difficult to do. He said that the best way to go about this is to lower food intake so you can still enjoy what you eat.
“The best way to gain weight, if that’s what you want to do, is to deprive yourself of food, so you can feel an extra need to eat, because diets can be punishing on your body, in that you are doing something to your body that it doesn’t want,” Goebel said.
The set point theory is something that people don’t know about, but a lot of people should be interested in, because according to Goebel it is the theory that is set by genetics and is the reason why some people can lose weight easier than others. It could be a genetic reason as to why a person keeps working out and eating right, and still can’t lose weight, when someone else just pigs out and never gains any weight.
These holidays are a time for stuffing your face and not exercising, but it should be important to set a plan and try to be faithful to it. A lot of New Year’s resolutions go bad after a week or two and no one wants to be that way. By following these directions by Goebel, you can prevent a lot.
