Health food is coming to campus. College of the Sequoias Associated Student Body is going to put two vending machines on campus with an assortment of 'healthy' foods. The COS farm will potentially get a machine along with the Hanford Center. "This is our best attempt to get healthy food on campus," said Frank Trejo ASB President. "We are waiting for a representative from the company to come to the campus to look at potential spots for the vending machine. Until then it's on hold. Hopefully we will have them on campus by this semester." ASB is considering putting a vending machine in the enclosure surrounding the coffee shop, and in the lobby of the bookstore. Organic Juices, milks, natural sodas, granola bars, dried fruits, Thai Kitchen's Instant Garlic Veggie Noodles, and Roberts Pirate/Veggie Booty, an alternative to Cheetos, are some of the health foods that will be available. Pricing for the products will range from around .75 cents to $1.75, according to Trejo. Timothy Brophy, the ASB Senator of Fine Arts, introduced the proposal for healthier food on campus. His reason for doing so is because "everyone talks about getting something healthy to eat," said Brophy. Getting healthy food on campus has been on the agenda for some time now, according to Trejo. Subway tried to get on campus through a survey last semester, but was deemed too expensive by Food Services. The cafeteria currently offers some healthy alternatives including apples, peanuts, trail mix, organic milk, juice, flavored waters, beef jerky, and tea. "There's a few wanting apples and fruit, but no complaints," said Kimberly Rogstad, a cafeteria worker, when asked about students and health food. "It's a good idea. Reenergizing on healthy things. It's a good selection," said Tianna Garoogian considering a list of health food to be offered. "Administration and staff really like that the student body is getting healthy food on campus," said Trejo. "I am excited to see what the options are. I usually skip meals because there are no good alternatives to greasy food, or I go off campus," said George Gonzalez, an Art Major at COS.
